Solar Panel String Sizing Explained: Volts, Amps, MPPT and Cold Weather
Solar-panel strings are one of the most misunderstood parts of an installation. The number of panels cannot be selected from wattage alone. A correct string must satisfy voltage, current, power, connector, cable and protection limits at the same time.
Five terms every buyer should understand
- Vmp: operating voltage when the panel produces maximum power.
- Voc: open-circuit voltage when no current flows.
- Imp: operating current at maximum power.
- Isc: short-circuit current used in protection and design checks.
- MPPT: the inverter input that tracks the panel string’s best operating point.

The latest product export describes the 585W panel at approximately 43.5V Vmp, 52V Voc, 13.46A Imp and 14.2A Isc. These figures are approximate catalogue values; the exact module label and datasheet must be used on site.

Series connection increases voltage while current remains broadly the same. Parallel strings increase current while voltage remains broadly the same.
Why cold weather matters
Panel open-circuit voltage rises as cell temperature falls. A string that appears safe at standard test conditions can exceed an inverter’s maximum DC voltage on a cold clear morning. The installer must use the panel’s temperature coefficient and the site’s design minimum temperature.
Why modern high-wattage panels need current checks
Large modules often produce 13A or more. Two parallel strings can therefore present more than 26A to an MPPT. The inverter’s maximum input current and short-circuit-current limit must be checked before parallel strings are combined.

String-design checklist
- Confirm the exact panel model and electrical label.
- Confirm the exact inverter model and every MPPT limit.
- Calculate minimum panels needed to reach startup and MPPT voltage.
- Calculate maximum series panels at the coldest design temperature.
- Check current for every MPPT and parallel-string arrangement.
- Confirm DC breaker, fuse, isolator, surge protection and cable ratings.
- Keep connectors compatible and correctly crimped.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put ten panels in one string?
Only when the exact panel Voc, cold-temperature correction and inverter maximum voltage permit it. For some inverters ten large panels may exceed the limit.
Can I use one string on each MPPT?
Often yes, and this can be useful for different roof orientations. The strings should still satisfy each MPPT’s voltage and current requirements.
Are all MC4 connectors interchangeable?
Connectors may look similar but should be matched according to the manufacturer and standard. Poor mating or crimping can create heat and fire risk.
