When one battery is enough

Do not mix batteries casually
Parallel batteries should normally be the same brand, model, voltage, capacity and similar age. They need compatible firmware, communication and current-sharing arrangements. Mixing different battery chemistries, BMS protocols or states of health can cause uneven charging and warranty problems.
Protection for two batteries
A professional design may require individual branch fuses or disconnectors for each battery, correctly sized parallel cables, equal cable lengths, a protected busbar and a main battery isolator. The installer must check each battery’s maximum continuous and peak current.
Solar charging implications
Two batteries take more energy to recharge. A 4.68kWp panel array can replenish a 10.24kWh bank more effectively than a small 2.34kWp array, especially when the home also consumes electricity during the day. More storage without enough solar may leave the batteries partially charged.
Cost decision
The second battery usually improves comfort more than increasing inverter size when the customer’s problem is short runtime. Increasing inverter size helps when the system overloads; increasing battery size helps when the system runs out of stored energy.
