Solar Installation, Electrician and Delivery Costs in South Africa
Solar Installation, Electrician and Delivery Costs in South Africa
The product price is only one part of a solar quotation. A professional installation must also account for distribution-board work, protection equipment, cable routes, roof mounting, testing, documentation, travel, delivery and commissioning.
Estimated electrician and commissioning costs
| Installation type | Estimated electrician and commissioning allowance |
|---|---|
| Portable inverter and battery setup | R500–R1,500 |
| 1kW fixed essential-load DB system | R4,500–R7,500 |
| 3.6kW essential-load DB system | R6,500–R10,000 |
| 5kW hybrid with panels | R14,000–R22,000 |
| 6kW hybrid with panels | R16,000–R25,000 |
| 5kW system with two batteries | R22,000–R35,000 |
| 8kW large-home system | R30,000–R50,000 |
| Custom off-grid installation | R40,000–R75,000+ |
These are planning allowances, not fixed rates. The final labour price depends on the site, number of circuits, roof height, cable distance, board condition, access, system size and compliance requirements.
What normally increases labour cost?
- major reconstruction of an old or overcrowded distribution board
- long AC, battery or PV cable routes
- tile-roof repair work, high roofs or scaffolding
- underground trenching and outbuildings
- three-phase systems
- generator integration or automatic-start controls
- multiple batteries, busbars and parallel protection
- municipal documentation, additional site visits or specialist sign-off
- remote farms and difficult vehicle access
Whitehouse estimated delivery zones
| Zone | Estimated charge | Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 1: Local | R100–R200 | Trichardt and Secunda |
| Zone 2: Gert Sibande and nearby regional route | R250–R600 | Kinross, Evander, eMbalenhle, Bethal, Leandra, Leslie, Charl Cilliers, Brendan Village, Ermelo, Breyten, Davel, Chrissiesmeer, Standerton, Morgenzon, Balfour, Grootvlei, Carolina, Badplaas/eManzana, Elukwatini, Piet Retief/Mkhondo, Amsterdam, Volksrust, Amersfoort, Perdekop, Wakkerstroom and Greylingstad. Kriel is quoted on route and lies outside Gert Sibande. |
| Zone 3: Near-regional | R700–R1,000 | Benoni, Germiston, eMalahleni/Witbank and Middelburg |
| Zone 4: Greater Gauteng | R1,200–R2,000 | Johannesburg, Johannesburg South, Lenasia, Fourways and Pretoria/Tshwane |
| Zone 5: Long-distance regional | R2,000–R5,000 | Parys, Potchefstroom, Bloemfontein and Mbombela/Nelspruit |
Delivery conditions
The final delivery quote depends on the number and size of panels, battery weight, insurance, tolls, dedicated-vehicle requirements, offloading assistance, remote access, additional trips and whether the delivery is coordinated with the installation team. Solar panels and lithium batteries require careful transport and cannot always be treated like ordinary parcel freight.
What the customer should send for an accurate quote
- clear photographs of the distribution board with the cover open and closed
- a photograph of the electricity meter and supply details
- recent electricity bills or prepaid usage information
- a list of appliances that must remain operational
- appliance wattages and motor specifications where available
- required backup duration
- roof photographs, roof type and shading information
- delivery address and access instructions
- single-phase or three-phase confirmation
- existing generator or solar equipment details
- available inverter and battery installation space
- budget range and future expansion plans
How the quotation should be structured
| Quotation section | What should be stated |
|---|---|
| Core equipment | Exact inverter, battery and panel models and quantities |
| Balance of system | DB, breakers, surge protection, isolators, fuses, cable and mounting |
| Installation | Labour, travel, roof work, testing and commissioning |
| Compliance | CoC and applicable SSEG documentation |
| Delivery | Zone, route, insurance, offloading and additional trips |
| Warranty | Product, battery, panel and workmanship terms |
| Exclusions | Trenching, repairs, municipal fees, scaffolding and unforeseen work |
Why the cheapest quotation may cost more later
A quotation can look inexpensive because it excludes panel mounting, compliant isolation, battery protection, a proper essential-load board, surge protection, registration documents or a CoC. Compare the complete scope rather than the inverter and battery price alone.
Products that commonly affect installation cost
- NUR 12 Way Surface Distribution Board — essential-load distribution-board enclosure
- NUR Earth Leakage Din Rail 63A DP 3kA — earth-leakage protection
- Lear 2P Surge Arrester — AC surge protection
- Onesto 2P 160A Battery Disconnector — battery disconnection
- Onesto 160A Battery Fuse Link — battery fuse-link example
- WHL&E Solar Combiner Box 3 In 1 Out — multi-string solar combiner
- 3.5M Unistrat Rail — panel mounting rail
- WHL&E Roof Clamp Long — roof mounting clamp
- WHL&E MC4 1-1 Male/Female Connector — PV connector set
Frequently asked questions
Is delivery included in the installed package estimate?
No. Delivery is quoted separately because panel quantity, battery weight, route and offloading requirements differ.
Does an electrician’s price include a CoC?
The formal quotation should state this clearly. A compliant fixed installation requires inspection and testing by the appropriate registered person before a valid Certificate of Compliance is issued.
Can the quote be final without a site inspection?
A remote estimate is useful, but a final fixed quotation may require a site inspection or comprehensive photographs and measurements.

Technical and registration requirements can change. The formal quotation and installer design must be checked against the requirements that apply to the customer’s electricity distributor, property, inverter model and installation date.
Planning note: package prices, product stock and installation allowances are indicative. Final design depends on the load schedule, cable routes, roof, earthing, distribution board, municipal or Eskom requirements and the exact equipment available when the quotation is issued.
