5kW Inverter, 5.12kWh Battery and Four-Panel Solar Package

5kW Inverter, 5.12kWh Battery and Four-Panel Solar Package

The Solar Essentials Hybrid package is designed for customers who want a clear boundary between essential electricity and high-consumption appliances. It combines approximately 5kW of inverter capacity with 5.12kWh of nominal battery storage. The proposed 4-panel array is approximately 2.34kWp using 585W modules.

Quick package snapshot

Specification Planning value
Inverter class 5kW
Nominal battery 5.12kWh
Conservative usable AC energy 3.69kWh
Solar array 2.34kWp
Example average load 800W
Approximate example runtime 4.6 hours without solar
Estimated installed price before delivery R52,000–R63,000

What this system can reasonably power

  • whole-house LED lighting
  • refrigerator and freezer
  • televisions, routers, computers and office equipment
  • selected bedroom, lounge and kitchen plugs
  • kettle, microwave or washing machine individually

What should normally remain off the system

  • electric geyser on battery power
  • stove, oven and space heater
  • tumble dryer and pool heater
  • multiple high-power kitchen appliances together

Approximate battery runtime

Average connected load Planning runtime without solar
400W 9.2 hours
600W 6.1 hours
1000W 3.7 hours
2000W 1.8 hours

These figures are not guarantees. Appliances cycle on and off, refrigerators have startup current, battery settings differ, and daytime solar can extend runtime substantially when conditions are favourable.

Example simultaneous-load plan

A sensible essential-load plan starts with the devices that protect communication, food, security and work. Keep LED lighting, Wi-Fi, a television, office equipment and refrigeration on controlled circuits. Use high-power appliances one at a time only where the inverter rating allows it. The system must never be treated as unlimited electricity simply because the inverter has spare capacity at one moment.

Core catalogue components

Distribution-board design

The electrician should decide whether the property needs a separate essential-load DB, a larger hybrid-load DB or a carefully labelled section within an existing compliant board. At minimum, the design should address:

  • inverter AC input, AC output and bypass isolation
  • earth-leakage or residual-current protection appropriate to the design
  • separate breakers for lights, refrigeration and essential plugs
  • AC surge protection and any required DC surge protection
  • battery fuse protection and battery disconnection
  • neutral and earth arrangement, bonding and test results
  • permanent labels, a single-line diagram and customer handover instructions

Cost breakdown

Cost area Planning allowance
Core inverter or combo listed in the latest product export R21,199
Additional listed batteries Included in core combo
Proposed solar panels R7,000
Protection, DB, mounting, cable and installation materials R4,801–R10,801
Electrician, commissioning, testing and CoC allowance R14,000–R22,000
Estimated installed package before delivery R52,000–R63,000

Catalogue prices are taken from the latest supplied product export and can change. Quantities of rails, cable, connectors, breakers and clamps depend on the roof, string design, cable length and distribution board.

Pros

  • clear package size and expected load boundary
  • lithium battery platform with lower maintenance than traditional lead-acid storage
  • pure sine-wave inverter equipment suitable for compatible electronics
  • an upgrade path through solar panels, matched batteries or a larger inverter platform, depending on the model

Cons and limitations

  • runtime falls quickly when kettles, heaters, geysers or other high-power appliances are used
  • final battery and inverter compatibility must be confirmed by exact model and firmware
  • roof space, shade and municipal or Eskom requirements can affect the final package
  • a quoted inverter rating does not guarantee that every motor or compressor will start correctly

Warranty and handover

Warranty must be confirmed for the exact inverter, battery, solar-panel model and serial-number batch. Installation quality, battery settings, temperature, communication, internet monitoring, firmware and correct protection can affect warranty support. Keep the invoice, serial numbers, commissioning report, Certificate of Compliance and all installer documents.

Frequently asked questions

Can this package run a kettle?

The inverter may supply a typical kettle, but it should be used briefly and separately from other high-power appliances. Battery energy is still limited.

Can it run a refrigerator?

A refrigerator can often be included, but its running wattage is not the whole story. The electrician or system designer should check startup current, age, condition and the combined load at the moment the compressor starts.

Can I add panels or batteries later?

Often yes, but expansion must remain within the inverter’s input, battery-current and communication limits. Batteries should normally be matched by model, capacity, condition and manufacturer guidance.

Compliance and reference sources

Technical and registration requirements can change. The formal quotation and installer design must be checked against the requirements that apply to the customer’s electricity distributor, property, inverter model and installation date.

Planning note: package prices, product stock and installation allowances are indicative. Final design depends on the load schedule, cable routes, roof, earthing, distribution board, municipal or Eskom requirements and the exact equipment available when the quotation is issued.
