Choosing a solar system is not simply a matter of buying the largest inverter. A useful package must balance inverter power, battery capacity, solar generation, distribution-board design, protection equipment, installation quality and the customer’s real appliance use.
Simple analogy: the inverter is the width of the pipe, the battery is the size of the water tank, the solar panels refill the tank, and the distribution board controls which rooms and appliances are allowed to use the stored energy.
What each number means
- Inverter kilowatts: the approximate power that can be supplied at one time.
- Battery kilowatt-hours: the stored energy available over time.
- Solar kilowatt-peak: the panel array’s rated size under standard test conditions.
- Essential circuits: the lights and plugs deliberately selected for backup.

The runtime figures use a conservative planning assumption of 80% usable battery depth and approximately 90% inverter efficiency, with no solar contribution. Actual runtime changes with appliance behaviour, battery settings, temperature, system losses and battery age.

The kettle comparison
A 2kW kettle operated for five minutes uses approximately 0.17kWh. The first question is whether the inverter can supply 2kW. The second is how much of the battery that short boil consumes. A small 1.28kWh battery loses a meaningful portion of its stored energy to one boil, while a 10.24kWh bank absorbs the same event far more comfortably.

Compliance before purchase
A permanently connected inverter or solar installation must be assessed and installed by a competent, legally registered electrical contractor. The final installation requires inspection, testing and the appropriate Certificate of Compliance. Grid-parallel systems must also follow the registration requirements of Eskom or the relevant municipality, using the exact inverter model and applicable test documentation.
