Solar Inverter Distribution Boards and Protection: The Essential Homeowner’s Guide

The inverter and battery are the visible parts of a solar system, but the distribution board and protection design determine whether the installation is controlled, testable and safe. A low equipment price can become misleading when essential isolation, surge protection, earthing, labels and circuit separation are excluded.

Main DB, essential DB and solar DB

  • Main distribution board: receives the property supply and contains the existing circuits.
  • Essential-load DB: contains only the circuits selected for backup.
  • Solar or inverter DB: may contain inverter input, output, bypass, protection and monitoring equipment.

These functions can sometimes share an enclosure when the board has adequate space and remains compliant, but many homes benefit from a separate, clearly labelled essential-load board.

Why circuit separation matters

A 5kW inverter does not mean the whole house should be placed on backup. The electrician may move lighting, refrigeration, Wi-Fi, security and selected plugs to the essential side while leaving geysers, ovens, heaters and other high-consumption loads on the non-essential side. This prevents accidental overload and protects battery runtime.

AC protection checklist

  • main supply protection and inverter AC input breaker
  • inverter output breaker
  • manual or approved automatic bypass arrangement
  • earth-leakage or residual-current protection selected for the inverter and circuit arrangement
  • individual breakers for lighting, refrigeration and essential plugs
  • surge protection and correct earthing
  • neutral separation or switching required by the final design
  • permanent labels and circuit schedule

Battery-side protection

The correct fuse and conductor size cannot be selected from inverter kilowatts alone. The installer must consider DC voltage, maximum current, cable length, temperature, installation method, battery limits, fault current and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Solar PV-side protection

Every PV string must remain within the inverter’s maximum voltage, MPPT range, current limit and permitted array size. Protection ratings must be based on the actual string design rather than copied from another installation.

Testing and documents

  • single-line diagram and circuit schedule
  • polarity, insulation, earth-continuity and earth-leakage tests
  • transfer, bypass and shutdown tests
  • battery communication and alarm verification
  • inverter settings and customer handover
  • Certificate of Compliance and applicable SSEG documentation

Red flags in a quotation

  • no mention of an essential-load DB or circuit separation
  • no AC or DC isolation
  • no battery fuse or DC disconnector
  • no surge protection where required
  • no cable-size or string-design basis
  • no CoC, single-line diagram or commissioning report
  • an installer who suggests back-feeding a wall socket
