Citiq prepaid electricity meters are sub-meters used to allocate electricity consumption to tenants or separate units. They do not replace the property’s main municipal or Eskom account. The property owner remains responsible for the main supply account while the sub-metering platform manages tenant token purchases and usage records.

How the system works
- A compliant single-phase sub-meter is installed by an electrician.
- The meter is registered and activated on the Citiq platform.
- The tenant receives the meter number and buys prepaid tokens.
- The tenant enters the token and consumes the purchased electricity.
- The landlord or manager accesses transaction and usage information through the platform.

Important limitations
A prepaid sub-meter does not solve unsafe wiring, overloaded circuits or an inaccurate main municipal bill. It measures the circuit connected through it. Installation must be done correctly, the meter must be registered, and the owner should explain tariffs, fees and responsibilities clearly.
Installation and compliance
Citiq’s terms state that the electricity meter must be installed by an electrician and the property owner must receive the required Certificate of Compliance. The final installation must suit the supply rating, cable size, DB space and property layout.

It can measure a shared circuit, but separate units generally need separate sub-meters if fair individual billing is required.
Is a Citiq meter the same as an Eskom prepaid meter?
No. Citiq is commonly used for private sub-metering behind the main supply meter.
