Which Fan Is Best for My Room? Ceiling, Retractable, Socket, Extractor and Personal Fans
A fan does not lower the room’s actual temperature in the same way as air conditioning. It moves air across the skin, making occupants feel cooler. The best fan depends on room size, ceiling height, airflow requirement, noise, lighting needs and installation type.

Choose by room
- Small bedroom: compact fan light or socket fan, provided clearances are suitable.
- Medium bedroom or lounge: retractable or conventional ceiling fan.
- Large lounge: larger blade span and stronger airflow.
- Bathroom: extractor fan sized for ventilation, not a decorative ceiling fan.
- Desk or counter: personal spray fan.
Ceiling-height and clearance
The blades must remain safely above occupants and clear of cupboards, doors, lights and walls. High ceilings may need a downrod to place the blades at an effective level. Low ceilings may require a flush or compact design.
Light output and CCT
Do not choose a fan light only by fan appearance. Check LED wattage, lumens, colour temperature, dimming, remote functions and replacement-module availability. A beautiful fan with weak lighting may require extra downlights.
Extractor fans are different
A bathroom extractor removes humid air through a duct or wall opening. Its performance depends on airflow, duct length, bends, back-draught protection and where replacement air enters the room.

Does a fan save electricity?
A fan generally uses far less power than air conditioning and can improve comfort, but it should be switched off in an empty room because it cools people rather than the building.
Are more blades always better?
No. Motor design, blade pitch, diameter and speed determine airflow. Blade count alone is not a performance measure.
