How to Choose the Right Chandelier: Size, Height, Style and Light Output

A chandelier is both a light source and a permanent design feature. The best choice must suit the room’s scale, ceiling height, table or furniture below it, colour palette, bulb type and required brightness. Buying only by appearance can result in a fitting that looks too small, hangs too low or produces uncomfortable glare.

Chandelier size by room

Room or position Practical starting point What to check
Dining table Choose a fitting visually narrower than the table Keep sightlines clear and centre it over the table
Living room Scale to the room rather than one item of furniture Consider ceiling height and surrounding downlights
Entrance or double-volume area A taller or multi-tier fitting can use the vertical space Check access for installation and cleaning
Bedroom Use a compact fitting or semi-flush chandelier Maintain safe head clearance

How high should it hang?

Over a dining table, the bottom of the chandelier is commonly positioned roughly 75–90cm above the tabletop as a starting point. Adjust for ceiling height, fixture depth, seated sightlines and the height of people using the room. In an open walkway, the fitting needs greater head clearance.

Choose the correct style

  • Gold and crystal: formal, warm and decorative.
  • Black and gold: bold contrast for modern interiors.
  • Glass: visually lighter and suitable where the room already has strong décor.
  • Integrated LED: clean and contemporary, but the light source is less easily changed.
  • Replaceable E14 or E27 lamps: allows future colour-temperature and brightness changes.

Brightness and globe selection

Multiply the number of lampholders by the lumens of each selected globe. Five 470-lumen lamps produce approximately 2,350 raw lumens before shade and room losses. A chandelier should usually form part of layered lighting with downlights, wall lights or lamps rather than carrying the entire room alone.

Installation checklist

  • confirm ceiling structure and fitting weight
  • check ceiling height and chain or cable adjustment
  • confirm E14, E27 or integrated LED type
  • use dimmable lamps only with a compatible dimmer
  • allow safe access for globe replacement and cleaning
  • use a qualified electrician for fixed wiring

Frequently asked questions

Should the chandelier be centred in the room or over the table?

In a dining room, centre it over the table even when the table is not exactly in the middle of the room.

Can I use daylight globes in a chandelier?

Yes, but warm white usually creates a more comfortable dining and living atmosphere. Daylight can appear harsh against gold, glass and reflective surfaces.
