Which Water-Heating System Is Right for Your Home?
South African households use several different technologies to heat water. The best option depends on daily hot-water demand, available roof or outdoor space, electricity and gas infrastructure, climate, maintenance expectations and the installation budget. There is no single system that is best for every home.
START WITH DEMAND
Before choosing a technology, estimate how many people use hot water, when they use it, the number of bathrooms and whether several taps or showers operate at the same time. A technically efficient system can still disappoint if it is undersized.
1. Electric storage geyser
A conventional electric storage geyser heats a tank of water using an electrical element and keeps it ready for use. It is familiar, widely serviced and capable of supplying several outlets, but water heating can be one of the largest household electricity loads.
- Best fit: homes that need stored hot water and already have suitable electrical and plumbing infrastructure.
- Strengths: familiar technology, predictable hot-water storage and broad installer experience.
- Watch-outs: standing heat losses, element demand, thermostat condition, pressure-control components and electricity use.
2. Solar water heater
A solar water-heating system uses rooftop collectors to transfer the sun’s heat into water. Many systems include electrical backup for cloudy periods or higher demand. Performance depends on collector orientation, shading, storage size, climate, pipe insulation and user behaviour.
A solar water heater is not the same as photovoltaic panels powering a normal geyser element. Solar thermal collectors heat water directly; photovoltaic panels generate electricity.
3. Heat-pump water heater
A heat pump moves heat from the surrounding air into the water instead of creating all the heat through resistance. This can substantially reduce electrical input compared with a conventional element, but the system still needs electricity and must be correctly sized and installed. Ambient conditions, placement, noise, airflow and maintenance all matter.
4. Gas water heater
A gas water heater heats water on demand as it flows through the unit. It can reduce reliance on an electric storage tank and may continue operating during some power interruptions, although electronic ignition, fans or controls on certain models can still require electricity.
Gas systems need the correct gas type, cylinder or supply arrangement, ventilation, flue design where required and installation by an appropriately registered professional. Do not treat a gas appliance as a plug-and-play substitute for an electric geyser.
5. Instant electric water heater
An instant electric unit heats water as it passes through the heater. It avoids storing hot water, but the required electrical power can be high. The distribution board, cable, breaker and supply capacity must be assessed before installation. Small point-of-use models and whole-bathroom units are not interchangeable.

How to reduce geyser energy use without replacing the system
Eskom recommends setting a geyser to about 60°C rather than unnecessarily high temperatures. It also recommends insulating older geysers and exposed hot-water pipes. The first 1.5 metres of pipes entering and leaving the geyser are a useful priority. Fixing leaking hot-water taps and reducing unnecessary hot-water use also lowers both water and electricity consumption.
Compliance is part of the product decision
Solar water-heater installations should comply with applicable South African installation requirements, including the standards referenced by government for solar water heating. Electrical, gas and plumbing work must be completed by competent professionals within their scope of registration. Ask for the required certification and documentation—not only a product invoice.
