Lighting automation can be simple. A day/night bulb can switch an outdoor light according to ambient light. An occupancy sensor can switch lights when a room is used. A timer can follow a schedule. The best device is the one that matches the behaviour you want to control.

Day/night sensor bulb

A day/night bulb has an ambient-light sensor and is designed to switch on when it becomes dark and off when daylight returns. It is useful for entrances, passages or exterior fittings where consistent dusk-to-dawn operation is required. The sensor must be exposed to representative ambient light; a shaded or enclosed fitting can affect operation.

Occupancy or motion sensor

An occupancy sensor detects movement and switches or controls lighting for a set period. It suits passages, storerooms, garages, bathrooms and utility spaces where lights are often left on. Coverage angle, mounting height, detection range, delay time and sensitivity should match the room.

Timer and smart timer

A timer switches a circuit according to programmed times. A WiFi timer may add app control, schedules and remote switching. Timers are useful for predictable routines such as exterior lighting, selected circuits, pool pumps or geyser control—provided the device rating, contactor arrangement and installation are suitable for the load.

DO NOT SELECT ON AMPERAGE ALONE

A timer marked 30 A is not automatically suitable for every 30 A load. Load type, switching duty, inrush current, installation conditions and the manufacturer’s instructions matter. Fixed high-load control should be assessed by a qualified electrician.

Will automation save electricity?

It can reduce waste when lights or loads would otherwise operate unnecessarily. The saving depends on the original behaviour, sensor settings, occupancy pattern and connected load. A sensor in a rarely used storeroom can create a large percentage reduction; the same sensor in a continuously occupied room may save little. Avoid promising one universal savings figure.

  • Confirm the supply voltage, load type and maximum rating.
  • Choose a sensor location with the correct detection path and ambient-light exposure.
  • Set a sensible time delay to prevent rapid or unnecessary switching.
