A full inverter system is not the only way to improve lighting during an outage. Emergency LED bulbs, rechargeable lanterns, work lights and emergency tubes can provide targeted backup lighting at a much lower entry cost.

How emergency LED bulbs work
An emergency bulb normally contains a rechargeable battery. During normal mains operation, the bulb works as a conventional LED and charges according to the manufacturer’s design. When the supply fails, the emergency circuit can provide reduced light output from the battery.
Operation is product-specific. The wall switch position, lamp holder wiring and the bulb’s sensing method can affect whether the emergency mode activates. Read the product instructions before relying on any emergency bulb as the only light on a critical route.
Choose the correct base: E27, B22 or GU10
- E27: the larger screw-in base used in many pendants, ceiling fittings and lamps.
- B22: the bayonet base with two side pins; push in and turn to lock.
- GU10: the short two-pin twist-lock base used in many downlights and spotlights.

Brightness and runtime are different in emergency mode
An emergency bulb may produce less light from its battery than it produces during normal mains operation. This is intentional: reduced output can extend runtime. Compare the normal lumens, emergency lumens, charging time and quoted emergency duration separately.
Actual performance can vary with charge level, battery age, temperature, operating mode and the condition of the fitting. Treat manufacturer runtime as an “up to” figure and test the product in the room where it will be used.
