The honest answer is yes—sometimes. A budget below R50,000 can fund a useful home solar and backup-power system for essential loads, but it should not be treated as a universal price for a fully installed solution. The result depends on what you want to power, how long it must run, the roof and cable routes, the required protection, and the labour and compliance work at your property.

Under R50,000 is most achievable when the system is designed around essential loads such as LED lights, internet equipment, a television, laptops and an efficient refrigerator. It is not a realistic promise for running every high-power appliance in a large home without careful load management.

Start with the appliances, not the inverter

A common buying mistake is to start with a fashionable inverter size and then try to make the household fit around it. Reverse the process. Write down the appliances that must operate during an outage, their running power, likely start-up demand and the hours of use. Separate essential loads from discretionary loads.

The remaining budget is not “spare profit”.
