Short answer: a BMS communication fault does not always mean the battery is faulty. It can be caused by the wrong inverter battery profile, incorrect CAN/RS485 port, wrong cable pinout, master/slave addressing, firmware mismatch, disabled communication, loose data cable, battery alarm or a current/temperature limit that the inverter is interpreting correctly.
Start with the difference between a communication fault and a battery fault
The Battery Management System monitors cells and communicates battery limits to a compatible inverter. If communication fails, the inverter may lose accurate SOC, permitted charge/discharge current and alarm information. The battery can still have normal cell voltage while the communication layer is wrong.
Your existing Whitehouse guide Lithium Battery BMS and Inverter Communication Explained covers the fundamentals. This guide focuses on what to check when the system is already showing faults, incorrect SOC or unexpected charge limits.
Common symptoms and likely areas to investigate
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Battery SOC frozen or obviously wrong | No BMS comms, incorrect battery profile, SOC drift | Battery protocol, comms cable, inverter battery mode |
| Battery charges very slowly | BMS current limit, temperature, SOC, cell imbalance | Allowed charge current and battery alarms |
| Battery suddenly disconnects under load | Low cell, overcurrent, temperature, BMS protection | Battery alarm history and load current |
| Inverter says 'BMS lost' / communication error | Cable, port, pinout, address, firmware | Correct CAN/RS485 interface and manual |
| Multiple batteries show only one pack | Parallel communication chain not configured | Master/slave settings and battery links |
| SOC jumps after restart | Monitor/BMS resynchronisation issue | Full-charge synchronisation and settings |
| Battery won't charge to 100% | Balancing, charge target or BMS limitation | Battery charge voltage, cell status, firmware |
CAN vs RS485: the connector is not the protocol
RJ45 plugs are commonly used for battery communication, but a network-style connector does not mean the cable is wired like ordinary Ethernet. Different manufacturers may assign pins differently and use different protocols. A cable can physically fit while electrically being wrong.
Battery profile selection matters
Hybrid inverters often have a menu of battery brands or protocols. Selecting “Lithium” without the correct protocol can still leave the inverter unable to understand the battery's current limits. When the battery model is unsupported, some systems permit manual voltage control, but this should only be used where both manufacturers allow it.
Parallel batteries add another communication layer
Multiple batteries may use one master pack to communicate with the inverter while subordinate packs communicate through an internal chain. Deye's current parallel-battery documentation shows a master battery connected to the inverter and adjacent batteries linked through communication ports. Exact DIP-switch addressing and cable order are model-specific. See Deye's parallel battery manual.
Do not “fix” BMS limits by overriding them
If the BMS reduces charge current because of high temperature, high SOC or a cell condition, increasing inverter current manually can work against the protection system. Find out why the limit exists first.
Whitehouse battery products to compare
The Volta Stage 1 New Gen 5.12kWh battery lists CAN, RS485 and USB communication. The Shoto 48V 5.12kWh battery is another current 48V option. Compatibility must be checked with the exact inverter and firmware, not inferred only from voltage.
What information should you send for support?
- Exact inverter model and firmware version.
- Exact battery model and serial/firmware where available.
- Photo of communication ports and cable labels.
- Selected inverter battery protocol/profile.
- Screenshot of SOC, battery voltage, current and alarm.
- Number of batteries and how communication is daisy-chained.
- What happened immediately before the fault.
FAQ
Can a system work without BMS communication?
Some inverter/battery combinations permit manual voltage-based operation, but this must be supported by both manufacturers and configured conservatively.
Why does SOC differ between battery screen and inverter app?
They may be using different data sources or one device may not be receiving BMS SOC correctly.
Should I replace the communication cable first?
Only after confirming the correct port and pinout. A new but incorrectly wired cable will not solve the problem.
