1-way switch
Use a 1-way switch when one switch position controls the light. This is common in small rooms, cupboards and simple circuits. “1-way” does not mean one lamp only; the switch can control a circuit with multiple luminaires if the electrical design and switch rating allow it.
2-way switching
A 2-way arrangement is useful where a light should be controlled from two positions: for example, the top and bottom of a staircase, two ends of a passage, or the door and bedside position in a bedroom. The two switches work as a pair. A 2-way switch can often be used in a 1-way application, but product series and terminal arrangements should be checked.
Intermediate switching
For control from three or more locations, an intermediate switch is installed between the 2-way end switches. Legrand South Africa’s current Arteor range, for example, lists dedicated 1-way, 2-way and intermediate mechanisms. The presence of a product in a range does not mean every plate, grid or support is interchangeable: stay within the manufacturer’s compatible system.
What do 2x4 and 4x4 mean?
These terms refer to common wall accessory formats, not the switching logic. A 2x4 plate is the familiar narrow rectangular format; 4x4 is a wider square format used where more modules or functions are needed. Product families may use different support frames, module widths and plate systems, so the wall box, support frame and front plate should be selected together.
What to photograph before buying a replacement
- Front of the existing plate and number of levers.
- Manufacturer / range name if visible.
- Wall-box size and plate dimensions.
- The product label or mechanism model if accessible without disturbing live wiring.
- The number of control locations for the same light.
- Any dimmer, indicator, smart or bell-press function that must be retained.
Do not copy terminal wiring from an internet diagram
Switching terminology is safe to explain; fixed-wiring work is different. Existing installations may use different conductor identification, legacy wiring practices or multi-way arrangements. Replacement of fixed switchgear should be assessed by a competent person rather than wired by matching colours from a generic diagram.
