Good outdoor lighting is not the brightest fitting you can buy. It puts enough light on entrances, paths, steps and faces while controlling glare and spill into neighbours or the night sky. Choose the fitting by location, ingress protection, beam direction, lumen output, colour temperature and controls. For many residential entrances, shielded warm lighting with a timer, photocell or motion strategy is more useful than an uncontrolled high-output floodlight.
Security lighting starts with visibility, not maximum lumens
Lighting can support orientation, facial recognition and reassurance, but excessive brightness can create deep contrast and glare. The Illuminating Engineering Society’s current outdoor guidance emphasises useful, targeted, low-level, controlled and warmer-colour lighting. Its 2025/2026 security education also highlights visibility, contrast and glare rather than treating raw brightness as security.

Wall light, up/down light or floodlight?
A wall light is useful where the building surface can help define the entrance. An up/down fitting creates a decorative architectural effect but may not provide broad path lighting. A floodlight is appropriate where a wider area genuinely needs illumination. The fitting type should follow the task rather than the assumption that “security” always means a high-wattage floodlight.
Why glare can reduce useful visibility
When a bright source is directly visible, the eye adapts to that high luminance and darker areas can become harder to see. IES guidance treats glare as a core outdoor-lighting design issue. Shielding, aiming and mounting height can therefore improve visibility even when the total lumen output is lower.
Warm colour temperature is increasingly recommended outdoors
DarkSky recommends warmer light, with 2700 K or lower as its most night-friendly residential recommendation, while the IES Five Principles call for warmer colour where possible. This does not mean every outdoor task must use exactly 2700 K. The broader principle is to avoid unnecessary high-CCT blue-rich light and to select the lowest practical output and spectrum for the task.
Use controls to stop lighting becoming permanent background light
A photocell can ensure a light operates only after dark; a timer can restrict operating hours; a motion sensor can provide light when somebody approaches. Combining these strategies can reduce unnecessary operating hours and light spill. For a garage or gate that needs continuous visual coverage, the correct solution may differ from a side passage that is used for only a few minutes per night.
IP ratings and exposed locations
Outdoor ratings should be matched to actual exposure. Under an eave is different from an exposed garden wall; a fitting near irrigation or coastal weather may face different conditions again. IP rating is only one factor: corrosion resistance, material, gasket design, cable entries, mounting orientation and manufacturer instructions also affect durability.

- Light the approach path, steps and lock/key area — not only the wall.
- Avoid an exposed bright source at normal eye level.
- Choose enough light for the task, not the highest-lumen option by default.
- Use warmer CCT where practical and keep colour consistent across the facade.
- Add motion, timer or day/night control when continuous lighting is unnecessary.
- Check IP rating and weather exposure.
- Use matching wall-light scale and mounting height across the elevation.
- For cameras, test the scene at night: an over-bright luminaire can cause blown highlights and dark backgrounds.
