Winter Fire & Electrical Safety South Africa: Heaters, Plugs, DB Protection & Emergency Lighting

Winter increases the use of heaters, hot-water appliances, cooking equipment and alternative lighting. South African health and emergency authorities repeatedly warn that this period also brings increased burn and fire risk.

The best cold-front preparation is therefore not only buying a heater. It is checking that the heater, plug, socket and electrical installation can be used safely.

Before switching on a heater that has been stored for months

  • Inspect the cord for cuts, crushing or brittle insulation.
  • Check the plug for cracks, loose pins or heat damage.
  • Make sure the heater is clean and that vents are unobstructed.
  • Read the manufacturer's instructions before use.
  • Place it on a stable surface with clear space around it.

Eskom advises that portable space heaters be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not into multiplugs or extension cords, and kept at least one metre from curtains, bedding, furniture and other combustible material.

If the plug or wall socket gets hot, stop

A hot plug, melted socket, burning smell or repeated tripping is a warning sign. Do not keep using the appliance and do not bypass the breaker. Have the circuit and appliance checked by a competent person.

Products such as the NUR Earth Leakage Din Rail 63A DP 3kA, Lear 63A 2P Samite Earth Leakage and Lear 2P 63A Voltage Protector may form part of appropriately designed protection systems, but DB-board changes must be selected and installed by a qualified electrician.

Protect electronics from surges and switching events

Winter weather and local outages can leave homes repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting equipment. Sensitive electronics may benefit from appropriate surge protection. Whitehouse stocks the CBI Surge Protection Device and Lear 2P Surge Arrester for professional DB installations, along with point-of-use devices such as the Surge Safe Plug for suitable connected equipment.

For a deeper explanation, see our South African home surge-protection guide.

Keep a fire-response plan, not just a heater

Government winter safety guidance stresses that heating devices and open flames should never be left unattended. Every household should know how to exit quickly and how to call local emergency services.

The MCE Fireball Extinguisher is an automatic fire-suppression product that activates on direct flame contact. It can be considered as one layer of protection in suitable locations, but it does not replace safe behaviour, a correctly specified extinguisher strategy, alarms or emergency services.

Use rechargeable lighting rather than candles during an outage

If power fails, battery or rechargeable lights remove an open flame from an already cold home. Useful options include the Flash 5W LED Camping Lantern 6000K and Brightstar BULB LED 280 5W Emergency Bulb E27 4000K.

When electrical work changes the installation

South Africa's Department of Employment and Labour reminds property owners to use competent, legally registered electrical contractors and to maintain compliant electrical installations and Certificates of Compliance. Fixed heaters, new DB protection, timers and other installation changes should not be treated as casual DIY work.

Winter safety checklist

  • Never leave a portable heater unattended or running while sleeping.
  • Keep at least one metre clearance from flammable items.
  • Do not dry clothes on a heater.
  • Do not overload sockets or use a multiplug for a portable heater.
  • Stop using damaged plugs, cords or hot sockets.
  • Use rechargeable lights instead of candles where possible.
  • Use a registered contractor for fixed electrical work.
