Winter electricity bills can climb quickly because households often use several high-demand appliances at the same time: heaters, geysers, cooking appliances and extra lighting during longer dark hours. Eskom describes South Africa as having a pronounced winter evening peak, particularly between 5 PM and 9 PM, when normal evening routines overlap with space heating.

The goal is not to sit in the cold. It is to use heat, hot water and lighting more deliberately.

Start with the appliance that is actually using the power

Electricity consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A 2,000W heater is a 2kW load. If it runs continuously at full power for one hour, it uses about 2kWh. A 1,000W setting uses about 1kWh over the same hour.

Use this simple calculation:

Heater kW × hours used × your electricity tariff per kWh = estimated cost.

For a 2kW heater, one hour at full output equals about 2kWh. Multiply 2 by the rate on your own municipal, Eskom or prepaid tariff. Because South African tariffs vary, a single national rand-per-hour figure would be misleading.

Use the geyser around your household, not the other way around

A geyser timer can help organise when the circuit is energised. The value comes from matching heating periods to actual hot-water demand and avoiding unnecessary reheating windows where practical.

Eskom's public guidance identifies 5 PM to 9 PM as the household evening peak. Where your household routine allows it, tasks such as geyser reheating, pool-pump operation and some other discretionary loads can be scheduled outside the busiest period. Your comfort and safety should still come first; do not switch off equipment that must operate for health, safety or manufacturer requirements.

Use efficient lighting for the extra winter hours

Do not run heaters through overloaded multiplugs or unsuitable extension leads simply to reach a different room. Eskom's heater guidance recommends plugging a portable space heater directly into a wall outlet and inspecting the cord and plug before use.

If a circuit regularly trips when heaters and other loads run together, ask an electrician to assess the circuit. Never solve repeated tripping by simply fitting a higher-rated breaker without verifying cable size, circuit design and protection requirements.

A practical winter strategy

  1. Heat occupied rooms rather than empty areas.
  2. Use thermostat and lower heat settings when they maintain comfort.
  3. Schedule geyser heating around real household demand.

  5. Move discretionary loads away from 5–9 PM where practical.
  6. Fix draughts and improve insulation before assuming more wattage is the only answer.
