Short answer: a good patio or braai area needs more than one bright fitting. Use task lighting where food is prepared, ambient lighting around seating and dining, path lighting for safe movement and accent lighting for walls, plants and architectural features.
The objective is not maximum brightness. It is enough light in the right places without glare, dark steps or a floodlight shining directly into people's eyes.
The four-layer patio lighting plan
| Layer | What it should do | Typical locations | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task | Make food preparation and serving visible | Braai, counter, prep area, sink | Using decorative low-output light as the only task light |
| Ambient | Create comfortable general light | Seating, dining, covered patio | One harsh central fitting |
| Path / safety | Reveal steps, edges and routes | Doors, paths, level changes | Leaving a beautifully lit table surrounded by dark walkways |
| Accent | Add depth and atmosphere | Walls, plants, trees, textures | Over-lighting every feature equally |
1. Start with the braai, not the decorative lights
If someone is handling food, knives, hot surfaces or utensils, the work surface needs useful light. Position task light so the person does not cast a strong shadow over the work area. Avoid glare from an exposed high-output lamp at eye level.
2. Use warm, comfortable light around seating
Warm-white lighting is often a strong choice for relaxed outdoor dining because it feels softer and works well with timber, brick and warm finishes. The correct colour temperature is still a design decision: cooler light can improve visual crispness in a work zone, while warmer light usually feels more relaxed in the seating zone.
String lighting is useful here because it creates a visible ceiling plane without requiring a large decorative fitting. Current Whitehouse examples include WHL&E 20M Warm White String Lights, WHL&E 10M Warm White String Lights and O-Lite 15M Warm White String Light.
3. Check ingress protection before installing a fitting outdoors
“Outdoor” is not one exposure condition. A fitting under a deep covered roof faces different conditions from a fitting mounted on an exposed garden wall.
LEDVANCE's IP guidance gives useful context: IP44 is associated with splash exposure, IP54 with dusty or lightly rain-exposed areas, and IP65 with longer-term outdoor exposure to rain, humidity and dust. Product suitability still depends on the manufacturer's exact rating and installation instructions. See the IP rating guide.
4. Outdoor wall lights should illuminate architecture, not faces
Wall lights can frame doors, reveal columns and improve approach visibility. Consider beam direction and mounting height before buying purely on appearance.
Examples from the current Whitehouse range include Brightstar L366 Matt Black Outdoor Wall Light, WHL&E 10352 Black & Gold Outdoor Wall Lamp and Brightstar L565 Black & Gold Outdoor Light.
5. Add a separate garden layer
The patio should not feel like a bright island surrounded by blackness. A few controlled points of light in the garden can create depth and make the space feel larger.
Solar and garden options can be explored through products such as the Radiant Solar Mini Crackle Garden Light and Brightstar GS017 Black Outdoor Bollard Light.
Whitehouse Patio Lighting Planner
Walk through the space and tick every zone that applies:
- Braai / food prep: task light required.
- Dining table: comfortable ambient light, controlled glare.
- Seating: softer light and decorative accents.
- Steps: dedicated visibility at level changes.
- Path to house: low-level or controlled route lighting.
- Feature wall / plants: optional accent layer.
- Gate / side passage: separate security lighting strategy.
If you only have one light source for all seven zones, the design probably needs another layer.
How many lumens do I need?
There is no single lumen figure that suits every patio because beam angle, mounting height, surface reflectance and task all change the result. Instead of chasing one number, identify the visual task first, then compare manufacturer lumen output and distribution for the chosen fitting.
A bright floodlight may provide a large lumen number but still make dining uncomfortable because of glare. Conversely, decorative string lights can look beautiful while being inadequate for safe food preparation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an indoor pendant outside?
Only if the manufacturer specifically rates it for the location and environmental exposure. Do not assume a decorative indoor fitting becomes safe outdoors simply because it is under a roof.
What colour light is best for a patio?
Warm white is popular around dining and relaxation areas, while task areas may benefit from a more neutral appearance. Consistency matters: too many unrelated colour temperatures can make the space look fragmented.
Are solar lights enough for a braai area?
They can be useful for decorative, path or supplementary lighting, but a food-preparation area should be designed around reliable task illumination. Read our Solar vs Wired Garden Lights guide.
