October is the right month to prepare the house for summer. The goal is to identify the small failures that become big annoyances during the first serious heatwave or thunderstorm: a fan that no longer works, a dark side passage, a failed surge device, a blocked extractor or a solar light sitting under a tree.
Whitehouse 15-point summer-ready checklist
| # | Check now | Upgrade if needed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Run every ceiling/fan light through all speeds | Repair/replace before the first sustained heatwave |
| 2 | Check bedrooms for useful airflow at the bed | Add a fan, socket fan or fan light |
| 3 | Inspect portable fans and cords | Replace damaged units; do not use unsafe cords |
| 4 | Clean bathroom extractor grilles | Replace failed extractor fans |
| 5 | Test exterior wall lights after dark | Replace failed lamps/fittings with suitable outdoor products |
| 6 | Walk paths, steps and gates at night | Add garden/path lighting where visibility is poor |
| 7 | Test motion/day-night sensors | Adjust or replace poorly functioning control |
| 8 | Check solar-light panel exposure | Move panels/lights out of avoidable shade where product design permits |
| 9 | Inspect outdoor plugs/connections | Have damaged/weather-exposed electrical points assessed |
| 10 | Review surge/electrical protection | Ask an electrician if the installation lacks appropriate protection |
| 11 | Charge rechargeable lamps/lanterns | Replace failed batteries/products as needed |
| 12 | Review geyser/timer schedule | Use suitable control where professionally appropriate |
| 13 | Check inverter/battery alarms and ventilation | Service or seek technical support if faults appear |
| 14 | Prepare patio/string lighting | Test before hosting guests |
| 15 | Plan insect control | Clean/position dedicated insect-control products before summer entertaining |
Cooling: do not wait for the hottest night
Test the fan before the heatwave. If you need a compact solution, compare the WHL&E E27 Socket Fanlight and WHL&E 10W Double Ended Spray Fan. For larger rooms, consider a properly sized ceiling or retractable fan light.

Outdoor lighting: walk the property at night
Do one complete walk from gate to front door, around the side passage, patio and back garden. If you cannot clearly see a step or obstacle, that is a design problem—not just a decorative issue.
Use Outdoor Security Lighting Guide and Garden Lighting Design Guide to plan upgrades.
Storm protection: know what your devices do
A breaker, earth leakage device, surge protective device and voltage protector are not interchangeable. If you are unsure what the DB currently contains, have a qualified electrical professional assess it. Read Summer Storm Electrical Safety.
Solar and backup: summer is still a system test
Higher daytime use from cooling and other appliances can change how much solar energy is consumed directly. Review battery alarms, inverter messages and load priorities before you actually need backup.
For system planning, read Solar for Summer: Inverter, Battery & Panel Sizing.
Outdoor entertaining: test everything before guests arrive
Unroll string lights, check power leads, charge lanterns, inspect insect killers and make sure the braai task area has enough light. Halloween and month-end gatherings are not the time to discover half the setup is dead.
When should you call a professional?
Use a qualified person for fixed electrical faults, DB work, damaged sockets, circuit alterations, solar/inverter wiring and any situation where you cannot confirm that equipment is safe. Product selection can be DIY; electrical compliance is not a guessing exercise.
