How to Plan Downlights That Look Even, Bright and Comfortable
Downlights can produce a clean ceiling and useful general lighting, but the finished result depends on more than the number of fittings. The light source, lumen output, beam angle, ceiling height, room colours and spacing all affect whether the room feels even or patchy.

A GU10 system can be easier to service because the lamp is replaceable. An integrated downlight may suit shallow ceilings or a uniform architectural finish. Neither option is automatically superior; choose according to access, ceiling depth, maintenance plan and product quality.
Beam angle controls the spread
A narrower beam concentrates light and can suit artwork, counters or accent lighting. A wider beam creates broader general coverage. Two 5 W downlights can behave very differently if one has a narrow beam and the other has a wide beam. Compare the photometric or beam information where it is available.
Use spacing rules as a starting point—not a guarantee
A practical South African planning rule is to begin with spacing at roughly half the ceiling height, then adjust for beam angle, lumen output, room shape and surface colours. For a 2.8 m ceiling, that gives a starting spacing of about 1.4 m. Keeping the first row roughly 0.6–0.9 m from the wall can reduce dark edges or harsh scallops.
This is not a lighting standard and does not replace a proper layout. Dark finishes absorb more light; high ceilings need different optics; kitchens require more task light than lounges. Sketch the furniture, counters and work areas before fixing cut-out positions.
Plan kitchens to avoid working in your own shadow
If downlights are installed directly behind the person using a counter, the body can cast a shadow onto the worktop. Position task lighting in relation to the counter edge and add under-cabinet lighting where necessary. A kitchen often benefits from layered lighting: downlights for general illumination, pendants for the island and focused lighting on work surfaces.
Select colour temperature by room
- 2700K–3000K warm white: lounges, bedrooms and relaxed hospitality spaces.
- Around 4000K neutral white: kitchens, bathrooms, offices and balanced task lighting.
- 6000K–6500K daylight/cool white: garages, workshops and crisp high-visibility applications.
- 3CCT products: useful when the preferred colour is not known before installation, provided the selector is accessible and used as instructed.
Bathrooms require suitable fittings and zones
A bathroom is not one uniform environment. Splash risk varies by position, and the fitting must have the required ingress protection for its zone and installation. Do not assume every recessed fitting is suitable above a shower or bath. Ask the electrician to confirm the location and product rating.

Before cutting the ceiling
- Confirm whether the ceiling has insulation, joists, ducting or pipes above it.
- Check cut-out diameter, fitting depth and driver clearance.
- Draw the beam layout against furniture and work surfaces.
- Confirm dimmer compatibility before wiring.
- Buy a sample and test the colour and glare where possible.
- Keep spare lamps or record the exact model for future replacement.
